How to tell authenticity, price, and buy gold or silver chain : Under the laws of the United States, manufactured gold and silver jewelry is required to be stamped with a manufacturer trademark and Karatage (gold content) mark. Any gold or silver jewelry that is not so stamped is questionable as to authenticity and is in violation of this law. Look closely. These are usually on the clasp and jump or joining rings located at each end of a chain or bracelet. On a ring or other piece they will be on the inside of the band, or on the body of the piece. In pricing and buying, it is the weight, not the price that tells the story. Gold and silver are bought at the manufacturing level by the gram weight, then priced for resale according to the cost. This is where it gets important. Many retailers do not disclose, or do not know (counter person) the gram weight on their gold or silver merchandise. By not knowing the gram weight you cannot tell for sure how much you are actually paying per gram for the jewelry. If the weight is disclosed, simply multiply the gram weight by the price of the piece to determine the per gram price. Simple. Now you are able to tell what piece of jewelry has the best pricing.
